Cake Decorating for Everyone
Want to make beautiful cakes that look just like they came from the fancy corner bakery? Believe it or not, it's not as hard as it looks. All it really takes is a few inexpensive tools you can get at your local craft store, and lots of practice.
First, the tools. At the minimum, you will need a basic set of tools that include a decorating bag, a coupler, and decorating tips. Using buttercream or another good decorating frosting, you are ready to get started!
The basic cake decorating technique involves squeezing the icing out of the bag while you guide the tip of the bag to make the design you want. Hold the bag in your dominant hand, with the twist resting just in the crook between your thumb and fingers. This puts the "bulge" of the icing into the palm of your hand, and lets you squeeze it easily to make the icing come out of the tip. You can use your other hand to guide the tip. Practice holding the bag and squeezing to see how quickly the icing comes out, depending on the pressure you apply.
We recommend checking out a few books and/or videos from your local library about cake decorating. Another alternative is to take an introductory class at your local craft or hobby store. These classes are also often offered at community education or outreach centers in your community. Another easy way to decorate cakes is to use specialty cake pans and a few basic decorating techniques. Good luck and enjoy your new hobby! You will soon be making cakes that are the envy of your family and friends.
